What our sole-trader service can include
Records and accounts
Organising bookkeeping and business records, and preparing sole-trader accounts and the self-employment pages of your return.
Allowable expenses
Reviewing allowable business expenses based on your records and circumstances. See what sole traders can claim.
Payments on account
Explaining payments on account and the amounts and dates shown by HMRC.
VAT and MTD
Advising whether VAT registration is required or worthwhile, and helping with compatible software, digital records and MTD submissions.
The work is tailored to what your business needs. Where the records and scope can be assessed, we agree a fixed fee before starting.
Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital
When you need to file
A sole trader normally needs a Self Assessment return where gross trading income for the tax year is more than £1,000. Other income or circumstances can also create a filing requirement, so we check the whole position.
Expenses and profit
Allowable business expenses reduce taxable profit, but the treatment depends on the type and purpose of each cost. Personal spending is not an allowable business expense.
MTD for Income Tax
Applies from 6 April 2026 to sole traders and landlords whose combined gross self-employment and property income exceeded £50,000 on their 2024/25 return, with lower thresholds later. See MTD for Income Tax.
Incomplete records
We review the records available, identify gaps and agree what bookkeeping or reconstruction work is practical.
How the process works
- Initial conversation: we discuss the business, deadlines, records and support required.
- Tailored information request: we explain which figures and documents are needed.
- Bookkeeping and accounts: we complete the agreed record and accounts work and raise any queries.
- Return review: we prepare the return and explain the calculation for your approval.
- Submission and next steps: after approval, we submit the return and explain payment dates or ongoing MTD work.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a tax return as a sole trader?
- You will normally need to send a Self Assessment return if your gross trading income for the tax year is more than £1,000. Other circumstances can also create a filing requirement, so the full position should be checked.
- Can Digivolve help if my bookkeeping is incomplete?
- Yes. We can review the records available, identify gaps and agree what bookkeeping or reconstruction work is practicable before preparing the accounts and return.
- Is VAT registration automatically beneficial?
- No. Registration may be compulsory when the relevant tests are met, or voluntary in other cases. Whether voluntary registration is suitable depends on the business, its customers and its costs.
- Can Digivolve support Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
- Yes. Where the rules apply, we help with compatible software, digital records, quarterly submissions and the year-end tax return.
- What should I bring to the initial consultation?
- Bring or describe your income records, business costs, bookkeeping system, previous return and any HMRC correspondence. We will provide a tailored information request after the conversation.
