HMRC already sees your online sales
Since January 2024, digital platforms report sellers’ income to HMRC each year. Sellers with 30 or more sales, or around £1,700 or more in sales in a year, are reported. If you are trading, that income must be on your tax return. Casual sellers of personal items are not trading, but HMRC may still ask.

Online seller FAQs
- Do I need to pay tax on what I sell online?
- If you are trading, yes, on your profit. The first £1,000 of trading income can be covered by the trading allowance. Selling your own unwanted items is not usually trading.
- Does Etsy or eBay report me to HMRC?
- Platforms report sellers who make 30 or more sales, or around £1,700 or more, in a calendar year.
- Do I charge VAT on Amazon sales?
- Only once you are VAT registered, but marketplace rules mean the platform sometimes accounts for VAT on certain sales. We check your set-up.
