Charity thresholds in England and Wales
| Requirement | From 30 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Independent examination required | Income over £40,000 (was £25,000) |
| Examiner must be professionally qualified | Income over £500,000 (was £250,000) |
| Receipts and payments accounts allowed | Income up to £500,000, non-company charities only (was £250,000) |
| Audit required: income | Over £1.5 million (was £1 million) |
| Audit required: assets | Gross assets over £5 million and income over £500,000 (was £3.26 million and £250,000) |
The new thresholds apply to financial years ending on or after 30 September 2026. So a charity with a 31 December year end uses them for 2026, and a 31 March year end from the year ending 31 March 2027. Your governing document or funders can still require an audit or examination.

What does your charity need?
Charity FAQs
- Does my charity need an independent examination?
- It depends on your charity's income and assets and its governing document. Smaller charities may only need trustee-approved accounts, while larger ones need an audit. We can confirm what applies to you.
- What is the difference between an audit and an independent examination?
- An independent examination is a lighter review than an audit, suitable for many small and medium charities. The examiner reports on whether anything has come to their attention that should be raised.
- Can you prepare our accounts as well?
- Yes. We can prepare the accounts and then carry out the independent examination, or examine accounts your treasurer has prepared.
